Fields served as the director of nursing at a Montgomery, Alabama nursing home — the highest-ranking clinical officer at the facility responsible for overseeing medication management. Despite this supervisory role, she exploited her privileged access to steal hydrocodone tablets from the facility's controlled substance inventory.

The conviction was announced July 11, 2025 by Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall. Directors of nursing at skilled nursing facilities are responsible for implementing and maintaining controlled substance protocols under DEA and state pharmacy regulations, including physical security of the drug supply and accurate documentation of all dispensing. Fields abused that position of trust.

Controlled substance diversion by clinical leadership is particularly serious in long-term care settings because residents rely entirely on staff for their medications, and diversion can result in residents receiving insufficient or no pain management.
